A warning post has been posted by me BEFORE the offenders repeat their mistakes. What I find most apalling is that the offender dares to claim that no warning was given. This goes to show that the offender did not read the message board and was just there to flood.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!

As such, the message board was taken down.

In view of the appeals made by EX-PUPILS OF P5 EXCELLENCE 2007, the message board will resume with effect from 23rd February 2008.

Hopefully this will give the offender sufficient time to think, reflect and REPENT!

P5 Excellence (and M3)!

This will be the last time that I address you all on the class blog. You guys have finally reached the end of the P5 road. Yes, it has not been an easy one for most. Topics are tougher as you all move another step closer to your 1st big exam, the PSLE in 2008. However, what you guys must and have done is to show that you are even tougher than the topics!

Below are our class photos taken yesterday. For those individual shots with your buddies, I'll email to you all too at your lead.com email. Here goes our parting shots (absentees: Krishanth, Puvind, Nasir, Junsheng, Haziq, Desmond, Kenneth and not forgetting our 'big brother' Xunhui) I will leave this blog as it is on the Internet. It has been a pleasure teaching you all in 2007. Take care and good luck for your PSLE next year!

P/S: Do revise on your P5 work during this school holiday. Majority of your PSLE will be on your P5 work so do revise them, master them and don't worry about P6 work at this point.

IT Lessons

Please note that there will be IT Lessons (Webpage design) during this last week of school. It will be held on Monday and Tuesday during school hours. Thus there will be no PE lesson on Monday.

Do note that this course is free and has been paid for by the school. However, if you miss the lessons for any reason (excluding on medical leave - MC), you will need to pay the money back to the school. Hence please attend this lessons as you will pick up a very useful computer skill.

Please remember to bring back your report book on Monday too!

Dragon Boat - 5 Nov '07

5 Excellence!

Hope this day is an unforgettable one for you. I'm sure this is our first time dragon-boating (yes, including myself). It is not just a day about fun, but also to expose yourself to one of the many water sports that are available in Singapore. More importantly, it is an important lesson on TEAMWORK!

Unfortunately, not all of us could enter the water as they did not bring their extra set of uniforms.

Getting ready for the 'Dragon'

This is how you 'dig' into the sea

Off we go!

During the activity, we had a few races with the other dragonboats. Every member on the boat had to play their part in rowing the boat. Their only job was to listen to the timing given by the leader and to just focus and concentrate on rowing the dragonboat. Once any member starts to look elsewhere and worry about not being fast enough, the race would immediately be lost.

Walking hand in hand - "Together we overcome any challenges!"

Still remember the swim? Hey, our boat was the only one that had the opportunity to 'abandon ship' and swim to shore. And all of us did it! The waves may be a little choppy but that did not stop us from doing our best to swim ashore. It was not an easy feat and I'm sure the other classes may not be able to accomplish it like us! Hey! We were the only class which did not have anybody falling off the boat. Neither did we have any pupils vomiting in the boat or cry! Wasn't it amazing?!

Welcome the 'dragon', back to its 'nest'

I know many of you hated this part of the activity - to return the boats. The other classes had helped us pull out the boats and thus it was our turn to keep the boats. Again, you would realise that the success in completing this task lies with our teamwork. The first few tries may not be a smooth one as it was our first time working together. However, practice makes perfect. The extra teamwork effort that came in made the process even faster and smoother.

Feeling tired and beaten?

Didn't you guys wish you were as wet as the rest?

I hoped you all have learnt an important lesson on staying FOCUSED, TEAMWORK and DETERMINATION from this activity. Staying FOCUSED when rowing the boat, putting in TEAMWORK into action in moving the boat as well as having the DETERMINATION to swim back ashore.

It is very much closely related to your studies. When you are studying for your exams, you must be very focused in class, paying 100% and not be distracted by other things going around you or with your friends. Certain lessons require you to do an activity as a group in class. You have to help one another in order to accomplish the very same goal of the activity.

Lastly, you must have the will and determination to overcome all challenges in order to succeed. It is okay to try hard and fail, but it is not okay to not even try and give up. Only losers give up. Winners win by lots of trying and not having the fear of failing. They may have failed a couple of times but at the end of the day, sweet victory will be theirs. Even if they do not succeed, at least they have tried their very best and their conscience is clear.

That is what we mean by EXCELLENCE. Well done P5 Excellence! You guys sure did me proud! :)

Final Exam Tips and Reminders

English

Go through you past worksheets, especially on the sections of grammar, vocabulary and synthesis.
Avoid silly mistakes by checking for your spelling, tenses and punctuations.
Check your work and keep on re-checking until the last minute of the exam.
For Situational Writing, make sure you have mentioned about the six points given in the question. Take no longer than 25min to finish this section.
For Continuous Writing, be careful of your tenses and make sure that you are writing the in the correct person (depends on whether you are supposed to be 'inside' or 'outside' the story). Take no longer than 45min to finish this section.

Mathematics

Go through your worksheets, test papers and exam practice papers.
Avoid silly mistakes of not writing your units or not checking your work.
Take no longer than 25min to do your MCQ, no longer than 35min to do your Section B. Allocate about 60min to do your problem sums and the remaining 15min to check your work.
Check your work and keep on re-checking until the last minute of the exam.

Science

Go through all your worksheets, test papers and textbooks.
Spend no longer than 45min for MCQ and leave about 40min for your Section B. Spend the last 20min to check your work.
Be careful with spelling mistakes as it will cost you half a mark each!
Always write your answer such that it is clear and the marker need not come back to ask you for any clarification. That is, make your answer 'foolproof' whereby anybody (without any science knowledge) who reads it knows what you are saying!

Have sufficient rest before the exam and GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY! This exam is very important and it decides where you will go in P6.

P5 Math Practise Paper (Error - Q15)

M3!

For question 15, the answer should be option (3) 126 and not option (2) 132. I had overlooked on the fixed dimensions of the container. The working are as follow:-

Container --> 22cm by 18cm by 9cm
Cube --> 3cm by 3cm by 3cm

This means on the length side, the container can hold up to a maximum of 7 cubes (22cm divide by 3cm = 7R1). On the breadth side, it can hold up to 6 cubes (18cm divide by 3cm = 6). On the height, it can hold 3 layers of cubes (9cm divide by 3cm = 3).

Thus altogether there will be 3 layers of 42 cubes (7 x 6) which means the number of cubes that the container can hold is 3 x 42 = 126 cubes.

My apologies for this error.

Tips:

Reading Aloud (10 marks)

Greet the examiner - set him/her in a good mood first
Read loud and clear
Do not read too fast or too slow
Change your tone; add in your emotions while reading (so that you will not sound like a robot)
Remember to pause when you come across a comma or a full stop.
For words which you are not sure in pronouncing, just try your best to read that word, and read as per normal (no stopping, same speed) so that you will not draw too much attention to that wrong 'word'.

Picture Description (10 marks)

Firstly, describe the place shown in the picture (e.g. "This picture shows a school canteen.")
Start from one side (left or right side), describe what you see in the picture
Add your comments about what you have just described (e.g. "The boy looks grumpy. I think it is because he does not have enough money to buy his food")
Give your own suggestions or explanations to that situation you have described (e.g. "That boy should have checked his wallet for enough money before going to school.")

Conversation (10 marks)

Treat the examiner as your friend or relative - chat with him/her
Make sure you talk about the given exam topic and not about other topics
Speak up loud and clear
Talk more than the examiner
Thank the examiner

Remember:

Oral exam is the time for you to TALK! No talk, no marks! What sets you to be different from the rest (and therefore earning high marks) is to say different things from others.

Have a good rest, drink lots of water and GOOD LUCK!

I know that some teachers from other Math group classes have covered quite a lot of topics, some even way ahead of M2 or M3. I spoke to some of you who had proudly declared that your Math teacher has taught you that topic. However when I asked whether they understood the topic, the answer was a quick 'no'.

All I want to say is that what matters most is that you understand the topic. Your teacher may rush through (for whatever reasons he/she may have), but if things are really going too fast for you to understand the topic, please do let your teacher know. Ultimately the person taking the exam is you, not the teacher. Thus please please alert your teacher when in doubt as they cannot read your minds.

To M3, do not compare with other classes. Every class is different. Anyway we are still on track so don't worry. :)

A Note on Percentages

To those of you who are really not comfortable with percentages:

Think of them as fractions that are out of a whole of 100 (that is, 58% means 58 out of 100 parts).

This also mean that the denominator of the fraction is 100.

If you see questions involving percentages, just treat them as fractions by removing the '%' sign, then add a denominator '100' (that is, 88% = '88/100').

Thus if a question say 20% of 40 pupils, it will mean '20/100' of 40 pupils, or when simplified, it means '1/5' of 40 pupils.

Term 4 is going to be a fast and short term. Your exams will start from the middle of Week 7 to Week 8. In Week 6, only Monday is a school day as there will be 4 days of PSLE Marking Days and therefore no school for these 4 days.

Hence effectively, we only have 5 full weeks to complete the syllabus and revise for exams! Do be ready for a breathless Term 4.

Yes! Our class emerged the champions! They were all close fights. First it was a 3-2 win over 5 Humility in the quarter-finals, 3-2 win over 5 Neatness in the semi-finals and finally, a 3-1 win over 5 Diligence in the grand finals! Kudos to our players who performed true to our class name - Excellence: doing our very bests!

To our players, I hope that this has been an interesting and enriching experience for the 10 of you. Like I have mentioned, they were all very close fights. No doubt our opponents are very skillful, what matter most are:

our strategy
the actual performance
our understanding of our opponents
keeping our heads cool
thinking about our own performances - what had went right or wrong? (self-reflection)
not repeating the same mistakes
TEAMWORK!

Although we do not have a strong cheer leading team beside us, like the other classes, the unity and encouragement shown among the 10 of you are impressive.

Teachers' Day Celebration

To everyone!

The school shall be having a short Teachers' Day Concert Celebration in the school hall, on the last day of school (31st Aug, Fri). Timing will be confirmed again but do note that lessons are still on for that day (including your English Spelling for 5E).

I would like to take this opportunity to inform everyone to not buy any presents for me (in case if you are thinking of doing it). Your pocket monies are very precious, so please spend them wisely, save it for your future uses or you can buy something for your parents who have worked so hard to provide for you.

Well, I wouldn't mind if you want to make a card but please do not spend too much money. Teachers' Day (or Fathers' or Mothers' Day) does not mean giving presents. Everyday can be a Teachers' Day if pupils study hard, behave in class and show respect for their elders. Similarly for you parents, everyday can be a Fathers' Day or Mothers' Day. All we want is for you to grow up to be an upright and responsible person and doing well in studies would be a bonus.

Having said that, please do start to prepare for your exams too by starting your revision early. P5 is a crucial / important year.

Play hard but study harder! :)

For the many of you who are weak in your grammar, I would like to recommend you to get this book. It covers a lot of details in your basic grammar and also offers many exercises to practise on. (This is what I used for my remedial class).

I had bought it last year. This year I think the colour of the cover is blue. It can be found in Popular Bookstore and costs about $8.

I would strongly encourage pupils to get this book as it is extremely useful for those of you who are very weak in your grammar (or if you are speaking too much 'Singlish').

Correct Answer: You jump into the river and swim across. Have you not been listening? All the crocodiles are attending the animal conference.

This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

Main pointers:

When multiplying by 10, 100 or 1000, shift the decimal point to the RIGHT by 1, 2 or 3 places respectively - Answer should be a bigger number.

When dividing by 10, 100 or 1000, shift the decimal point to the LEFT by 1, 2 or 3 places respectively - Answer should be a smaller number.

In your workings when multiplying a decimal number with another whole number, count the number of decimal places and put the decimal point at your final answer.

For the following conversion of units, multiply by 100 (m -> cm)

For the following conversion of units, multiply by 1000 (km -> m, kg -> g, l -> ml)

For the following conversion of units, divide by 100 (cm -> m)

For the following conversion of units, divide by 1000 (m -> km, g -> kg, ml -> l)

If there is no other numbers/digits in front of a decimal point, put ONE zero. (e.g. 0.32 and not 00.32)

If there is no other numbers/digits behind a decimal number point, leave out the extra zeroes. (e.g. 0.8 and not 0.800)

However, for money values involving cents, always write it in 2 decimal places. (e.g. $5.90 and not $5.9)

Badminton or BAD-minton?

Whether you want to make it a fun experience or a bad experience, the choice is really up to each and every pupil.

After Mr Hui has announced to the P5 pupils that there will be a P5 Inter-class badminton competition, almost 4 out of 5 pupils are now brandishing their valuable badminton rackets, 'practising' at every single opportunity.

It sounds like fun and lots of actions. Pupils are very enthusiastic in this new sport. However, the following actions did give the whole event an ugly reputation.

Using the rackets as 'weapons', hitting their friends and at school properties.

Staying back in school to play badminton - withOUT informing their parents.

Playing too much badminton until they forget about doing homework.

Leaving these 'valuable' badminton rackets unattended.

Stealing badminton rackets.

I feel that I need to clarify a few things:

Form teachers will choose pupils to join the competition (if it is still on) - however the pupils have not been chosen yet.

There is no badminton practice by any teacher's permission - thus if you want to stay back in school to play, please inform your parents that you are playing on your own initiative.

Only for the next few PE lessons do you need to bring your badminton racket, that is, Mondays and Thursdays only. For badminton CCA players, Tuesdays will be included.

Keeping your badminton racket safe is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. If you do not take good care of it (e.g. leaving it unattended in class during recess), anything can happen to it.

Some tips to safeguard your valuable racket:

Always keep your racket with you at ALL TIMES, even to recess.

Make sure that you have markings that are not easily removable. (Permanent markers are not good enough.)

Keep the racket in the class cupboard. However it is not the Cupboard monitors' responsibilities to ensure that they are not stolen.

On having markings on your racket, you may consider doing the following (refer to the picture on the left):

(a) Design and colour the "stringed area" using a colour marker. This will give your racket a unique design.

(b) Wrap the handle with more than one rubber straps (each of different colours)

(c) Serialised your racket on the shaft - this means to go to the badminton racket shop and ask the shop keepers to help you inscribe / cut some unique string of numbers on your racket. It is like giving your racket a unique "NRIC" number so as to help you identify your racket easily.

There may be 101 ways to safeguard your racket, however if you do not take good care of it, it can still be lost.

There are more than 1000 pupils in Xinghua. Your racket is not UNIQUE - that is they are produced in millions! There is a very high chance that more than one pupil owns the same racket (possibly the same type of scratch marks).

Imagine if you lose your racket, how do you think we are can locate it? Should the whole school come to a stop and assemble at the hall for teachers to check on everybody and their bags? Isn't the school a big place for anybody to hide anything?

Think about it. Just what are the chances?

Isn't it better to, in the first place, make sure that your racket is safe with you? Is it worth to risk to go through the trouble and mental torture of losing your precious racket?

I know this has been a very long post by me but I hope that every word has been understood and acknowledged by you.

Don't make badminton a BAD-minton. The choice is yours.

The Story of a Mouse Trap

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. What food might this contain?'

The mouse wondered ... he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning," There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said,"Mr.Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him,"There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The pig sympathized but said,"I am so very sorry, Mr.Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray.Be assured you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow and said."There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The cow said, 'Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose."

Thus the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap ... alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital, and she returned home with a fever.

Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

However, his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well; she died.

Thus many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

Hence, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember ... when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

This Saturday is our visit to the NE Show 2007. Some important notes again:

Report to school at 3pm (make sure you have eaten your lunch)
Wear a red T-shirt (with no big cartoon or word prints. If its a "Singapore" word, no problem!)
Girls to wear their pinafore or culottes
Boys to wear their school shorts
All to wear their usual school socks and shoes
There is no need to bring anything as the fun pack will be sufficient (everything you need is in there, even caps and fans)
Dinner will be McChicken Burger and an apple pie.
Vegetarian pupils will need to bring your own meal
Please inform your parents that you will be back in school at around 10.30pm.
Do ask them to be patient as we may be caught in a traffic jam.

Thoughts about SA1

By now, most of you should have received all your SA1 results. Are you happy with them? Did you score fantastic results?

It is no use to cry over spilt milk. Whatever was done is done. The truths speak for itself. Although it was a tough exam, they are all still of 'pass-able' standards. Thus why did you not achieve what you thought you should achieve?

I hope that everybody so some self-reflection - meaning you think about what had gone wrong or what had gone right for you during this exam. If you are not getting what the results you thought you should be getting, ask yourself the following questions:

Did I prepare myself thoroughly for the exams?
Did I spend enough time revising, or did I play, watch too much TV or surfed the Internet for too long?
Did I repeat the same mistakes which I had made in the class tests and homework?
Did I pay attention in class? What/who is stopping me from doing so?
Did I do the homework?
Did I understand the homework?
If not, did I clarify with the teacher?
Did you do your very best?

After you have gotten the answers to the above questions, ask yourself how or what you can do to improve on them. The main learning point from this lesson is to learn from your mistake, do not repeat them and take steps to improve on them.

Your route to the PSLE is like a football game. Right now it may be half-time and you may have let in some goals. However all is not lost yet. You still have a chance to score goals in the later half of the game and emerged as the winner.

Do take some time during this coming school holidays to revise your work. Treasure this holiday break as it is a time for you to catch up before learning about more new things in the next semester.

The Red Eye

It is spreading so fast that your classmates are 'vanishing' as we speak. Yes, I'm talking about the sore eyes (or 'conjunctivitis') that has been going around in our school.

Nope, you do not contract it by being stared at. Neither do the germs fly from one sore eye to another healthy eye by the air.

It is all about personal hygiene. It all started by some bacterial infection of a pupil. When that pupil rubs his/her eyes, the germs get passed from the infected eye to the hand. When that hand touches another object for example another pupil's hand or a pencil, the germs can find their way to another person's eyes when he/she rubs the eyes with the contaminated hand or object.

The result - red eyes and possibly lots of tears and swelling around the infected eye. The solution - see a doctor fast to get some eye drops, never rub your eyes and always wash your hands.

Trust me, it is not cool to have sore eyes. You will not look good and you can hardly open your eyes for more than 3 seconds. You cannot see properly and you cannot play or enjoy much fun.

The holidays are coming so do take good care of yourself.

Some final pointers and reminders:

Section A (MCQ)

Check that you've completed ALL the questions.
If there's any question which you are absolutely unable to solve, choose any answer and not leave it blank.
Do write your rough workings on the question paper so that it is easier for you to check your work.

Section B (Short Answers)

Do remember to write your units.
Read the question again after solving to ensure that you have answered what the question wants you to solve.
For 'filling in the missing number' type of questions, do put your answers back into the question to check whether you have solved correctly.

Section C (Problem Sums)

Read the questions slowly and carefully. Every word is important!
Use models to help you 'see' the question. Every sentence can be drawn into a model.
Show all your 'working statements' in the main space, BUT do your rough workings in the working columns.
No workings = No marks.
Remember to write your units.
Write your answer statements to 'protect' yourself from copying the wrong answers onto the answer space.
Read the question (last sentence) again after solving to ensure that you have found what the question wants you to find.

Lastly - Remember to simplify all your fractions and ratios. Check and re-check your work. Do not waste a single minute of your time. If necessary, re-do the paper and check whether you will get back the same answer.

It's better to be 'kiasu' (by checking and rechecking) than miss the passing mark or regret later.

Here are the final tips which you all have been hearing me for the past 18 weeks.

Comprehension

Before reading the passages, do a quick read through the questions. This will prepare you (in your mind) to look out for the answers when you start to read the passages.
If the questions asks: "Why is ... ?" - Answer with "It is because ..."
If the questions asks: "Why was ... ?" - Answer with "It was because ..."
If the questions asks: "Why do ... ?" - Answer with "It is because ..."
If the questions asks: "Why did ... ?" - Answer with "It was because ..."
If the questions asks: "Which word ... ?" - Answer with "The word is..."
If the questions asks: "Which phrase... ?" - Answer with "The phrase is..."
If the questions asks: "Which sentence... ?" - Answer with "The sentence is..."
Write your answers beginning with a capital letter.
Check your answers - spelling, punctuation, grammar.

Cloze Passages

Read through quickly before attempting to answer the questions. Get a feel of what the topic is about and in which tense (present or past?).
Strike away those answers which you have chosen.

Stressed Up?

It's part of life.

Perhaps this post will come in timely since the S.A.1 exams are looming near. Yes, the 'S' word - Stress. Stress is present everywhere, big or small. We cannot avoid it. Even standing at the canteen thinking of what to buy is also a kind of stress because you need to make a decision. Life is also about making decisions. Our every single movement requires a decision to be made.

However, the good thing is that the decision lies in our hands. No doubt many things are beyond our control, but it is our very own choice to decide whether to face the problem (stress) or run away from it. The choice is really ours.

Imagine a life without stress. To be honest, life will really be boring. It is the presence of these stresses that makes life so interesting and full of challenges. What's so good about having 'challenges'?

Can you remember how you felt when you managed to solve your hardest math question without any help? Or when you scored very well for your exams/tests?

Yes. It is these challenges that gives us the chance to have that sense of victory and satisfaction with ourselves.

What I'm trying to say here is, stress is a necessary part of our lives. Befriend it and not shun away from it. Manage and control it, and not let it manage or control you.

Easier said than done? Not true. It really depends what decision you decide to make. That is, everything lies in your own hands. You are the 'Master of your own Destiny'.

Managing stress is not just a skill, but an art. If you are able to manage your own stress, nothing is impossible for you. There are many ways to manage or control your own stress:

Be honest and familiar with yourself - know your own strengths and weaknesses.
Set reasonable targets.
Take steps to achieve it.
Talk to a friend or an adult when you feel that you are lost. You will never know what golden words of wisdom they may offer you.
Even if they don't, at least you know that you've got a listening ear who will be there when you needed them the most.
Do take time offs to relax - take a nap, go out for some strolling, take a dip in the pool or exercise. These short time-offs will recharge your mind and body.
Once you've done all the above - time to face the problem (stress) and conquer it. It'll be a breeze.

Trust me on the above. Whatever that happens, tell yourself that everybody has gone through similar events / problems. If they can survive it, so can you!

Good Luck everybody! Demonstrate your virtue of Excellence - do your very best and you will still be able to hold your head up high regardless of the outcome.

Please note that the test on fractions will be held next week. Details are as follow:-

Date: 24th Apr (Tue)

Time: 12.30pm to 1.30pm

Topics: Chapters 5 and 6 (Fractions 1 and 2)

Main pointers:

For additions and subtractions ONLY, convert them into like fractions (same denominators).
To make things easy in your workings, change all mixed numbers into improper fractions.
For division on fractions, change the divide sign into multiply sign, TOGETHER with 'flipping/invert' the whole number.
Always keep on trying to simplify your answers.

All Competitors:

Must report to the school hall by 7.15am.
Have a full breakfast.
Bring your water bottle.
Must take the school bus back to be dismissed from school.

All Non-Competitors (going to the Hougang Stadium by school bus):
